Salt and flour were purchased to bake bread, and fish and meat were eaten fresh, salted, smoked, dried, or otherwise preserved. The Sámi cuisine has evolved, incorporating new dishes and outside influences, while still retaining its traditional elements.

Common ingredients in Sámi cuisine include reindeer and moose meat, Arctic char, whitefish, cloudberries, blueberries, lingonberries, Angelica, and mountain sorrel.
